There are a variety of ideas on how narcissists are created, but one thing is certain: they are emotionally inept, meaning they are unable to control their own emotions.
If narcissists didn’t utilize scapegoats, their inability to control their emotions would cause them to implode with all of the unpleasant emotions they’ve suppressed within themselves.
The narcissist’s bad feelings are stored in scapegoats.
A scapegoat can be found anywhere a narcissist exists. When a narcissist accuses you of being to blame for their failures or misfortunes, they’re simply projecting their own inadequacy onto you because you’re their scapegoat.
Being a scapegoat may be extremely devastating, especially for those who were forced to be it as a child by their parents or siblings.
Scapegoating Examples
- You ruined my life; if you hadn’t been born, I would have become a professional football player.
- Maybe I wouldn’t be so furious with you if you weren’t such an idiot.
- I despise having to return home to a miserable person like you.
- The only way you’ll achieve in life is if you’re continually being handed handouts.
- (blank) had to have shattered the window. Nobody else is as stupid as you.
