Without you there to forgive them or chase after them, they’re left alone with their conscience, which can be a very uncomfortable place for a narcissist.

If you’ve ever been in an on-and-off relationship with a narcissist, you might notice that the relationship never fully stabilizes. The periods of being “on” become shorter, and the periods of being “off” grow longer. This happens because the narcissist starts looking for other sources of validation. They might eventually replace you altogether, but as long as you let them come back, they’ll keep using you as a placeholder.
