Getting beat by a narcissist can be the most agonizing hurt they have ever felt because it jeopardizes their meticulously crafted dreamland. A person with narcissistic traits will invest lots of time and energy in attempting to build an image that is irreproachable, perfect, and unassailable.
Being defeated makes them feel exposed and vulnerable, as if all that effort has been squandered away. It implies disappointment, incapacity, and flaw—all of which are absolutely insupportable for a narcissist.
“Half of the people lie with their lips; the other half with their tears.”
― Nassim Nicholas Taleb
The fear of losing can be especially troubling for narcissists, as it often leads to them refusing any challenge or competition that they may not be successful in.
They are usually only willing to participate in activities where the outcome is almost certain—anything else could have a devastating emotional impact on their sense of self-confidence and esteem.
Even with something like gambling, which requires some amount of risk-taking by nature, if there’s even a slight chance of failure, then this is simply too much for them.
In both work and personal relationships, this aversion towards potential loss becomes extremely pronounced; they will wait until all odds are stacked firmly in their favor before ever venturing into an endeavor otherwise known as being ‘nobody’s fool’.
When faced with disappointment or rejection, however, things take an entirely different turn; they find it so difficult to accept such setbacks since these shatter illusions about themselves that hold no place within reality cause extreme outbursts against whoever denied their wishes!
