15 Things Never to Do With a Narcissist (Be Careful!)

Narcissists love future faking; this means promising to do something in the future in order to get what they want in the present. It can be as simple as promising to call back or, in a workplace, promising to put in a good word for you if you help them clear their workload. They notice what you want, and they promise to fulfill that to string you along in the now. Surprisingly, it works.

3 Don’t fall in love with them.

Try as much as you can to not enter into any kind of relationship with narcissists beyond what is absolutely and strictly necessary. Set healthy boundaries; narcissists are incapable of fulfilling your feelings and desires. They don’t see you as someone who exists outside of their needs.

2 Never expect an apology.

It’s okay to expect the other person to show that they know that they have offended you because apologies validate your feelings. While apologies can’t take away the pain or humiliation, it’s usually an important first step towards healing. When people don’t apologize, it’s easy to begin to second-guess yourself. You can wonder, “Did he really mean that, or am I overreacting?” When dealing with a narcissist, remember that your healing and well-being are the least of their concern. In fact, they feed off this uncertainty to take advantage of your empathy and pull you back in.

1 Don’t buy into the narcissist’s version of who you are.
