A narcissist doesn’t require, nor do they seek, your love or that of other people. They are only looking for your approval, affirmation, and attention. What they can get from you is the only thing they keep in mind. They’ll do whatever it takes to get it. Think of it like handling a new piece of furniture; for the first couple of weeks, you can pause on your way out and just take a look at how it lit up your space. When you purchase another one, all your admiration is diverted to the new one. A time comes when you become the older furniture to the narcissist. Don’t allow yourself to think you are somehow different from everyone else. They don’t like you better. A narcissist is always looking out for a shiny new toy, and their needs are impossible to satisfy.
13 Don’t try to change them.
Don’t keep the company of a narcissist in the hope that you can make them better. The reality is that narcissists are very resistant to change. Dealing with them is like pouring water into a funnel; the positive and supportive words you tell them flow out of the other end like you were never there. No matter how much you affirm a narcissist, they’ll always need more because deep down, they don’t believe anyone can love them.
