When a Narcissist Goes No Contact vs. When You Do It

When a narcissist decides to go no contact, it’s often impulsive, driven by emotions like anger or frustration. This tactic is frequently used to punish or regain control. If they believe cutting you off will achieve their goals, they won’t hesitate.

Narcissistic no-contact often comes with other toxic behaviors, such as the silent treatment, stonewalling (refusing to engage during a conversation), passive aggressiveness, or controlling tendencies. They might suddenly block you on the phone, social media, email—essentially cutting off all communication.

Narcissists often justify their actions with statements like, “They don’t deserve me,” or, “Nobody treats me like this and gets away with it. I’ll show them.” Their behavior reflects a mix of arrogance and delusion. You may hear them say things like, “Just wait, they’ll fall apart without me. When they come crawling back, I’ll make them beg for forgiveness.”

For narcissists, going no contact isn’t just about cutting someone off; it’s a way to punish and validate themselves, feeding their need for control and superiority. They see it as a lesson to the other person, often acting entitled, vindictive, and even playing the victim. They might also use no contact as a manipulative tool, leveraging it as a bargaining chip to bring the other person back on their terms.

Interestingly, narcissistic no-contact periods are usually short-lived, lasting just weeks or months. When they return, it’s often to regain control, as the person left behind may be desperate to avoid losing them again. If manipulation fails, they’ll twist the narrative to suit themselves, saying things like, “Are you ready to forgive me?” to regain power.
