It is stressful, but you deal with it by taking ownership of your life. However, when a narcissist faces financial struggles, their first thought is not about tightening their budget or finding work. Their first thought is this: Who can I use? Who can I drain? Who can I lean on so I do not have to carry the burden myself? That is the difference. Where you see responsibility, they see opportunity. Where you look for solutions, they look for people to exploit. When you understand this, you realize that a broke narcissist does not handle money the way normal people do. They survive by feeding off others.
1. Using Others for Basic Needs
They find someone who can provide a roof over their head and pay the bills. For a narcissist, survival always comes before love. A relationship is not about companionship, connection, or building a shared future. It’s about having someone who can give them what they need—simple and transactional. When a narcissist is broke, what they need most is stability. Not emotional stability, of course, and not financial stability. So what do they do? They look for someone who can pay the rent, keep food in the fridge, and provide a comfortable life. To them, you are not a partner; you are a provider. The craziest and most painful part is that they do not present it that way. They do not come to you saying, “I need you to take care of me.” No, they cloak it in romance. They will charm you, shower you with just enough attention, and make you feel like you’re the chosen one. But underneath the smiles, affection, and love bombing, that calculation is simple: you give me what I don’t have, and I will give you attention. The moment you stop providing that roof or stop paying those bills, what happens? The mask slips. That love that felt so deep suddenly vanishes because the lifeline has been cut.
