5. When you say “No” to them.
And the most famous one: when you say no to them. That’s just one word, but a word big enough to shatter their false self. You cannot say no to a narcissist. In fact, a lot of people recommend saying no to a narcissist or somebody who could be a potential narcissist to test whether or not they have narcissism in their personality. Saying no is a big violation. How dare you say no? No is not respected; no is rejected because it is some form of retaliation in a narcissist’s eyes. You’re not saying no to something; you’re saying no to the narcissist.
There is this hidden expectation, rather entitlement, that says, “No, I can do whatever I want to, and whatever I say should be regarded as a fact.” So why say no? When saying no, a narcissist may think, “Oh, you are rejecting them,” instead of thinking that you are rejecting that part; you just don’t disagree with the entirety of a person; you’re just disagreeing with that small part. But because they are masters at generalizing everything and thinking in extremes, they think you are putting them down, which triggers their suppressed shame. They take it out on you, project it on you through raging rage and anger. These are the only two things they feel; everything else is always put in the dustbin. That was number five.
