Narcissists don’t live in reality, and that includes their view of you. You’re just a source of their insatiable supply, and when you’re not, then you’re simply not valuable to their world. So they’ll belittle you and use your weaknesses to prove it. Narcissists capitalize on self-devaluation; they pick it up from what you say. For example, if you say, “I did that all wrong; my boss won’t be pleased with that submission,” they’ll say, “Let’s hope he cuts you some slack.” It sounds right, but a narcissist won’t take time to affirm the things you did right in that assignment. When they do it like that, you can’t call them out. This last one is probably the hardest thing to get over, but it’s possible with therapy and continuously affirming yourself.
