This can be combined with item number four. The key is being amazed: “I never would have thought of that, that’s genius.” Even a quick compliment can make a big difference, especially when it comes right after hearing the advice.
Offer to help the narcissist.
Say, “Look, you have a tremendous amount of responsibility. What can I do to help you?” This sends the message that what the narcissist is doing is important and you understand that the world would fall apart if they couldn’t complete their work.
Ask them about their dreams and don’t be mortified by their reply.
Narcissists have fantasies of success, power, wealth, and the ideal love. Often when you ask a narcissist about their fantasies, they gauge your reaction. Be excited about their fantasy world and not disgusted. Don’t make suggestions on how to improve it, as narcissists don’t react well to that.
Empathize with their feelings.
Empathize with their lack of empathy, their need to manipulate, their grandiosity, their desire for dominance, and their overwhelming confidence. For communal narcissists, recognize the good work they have done and their intention to help others.
Don’t put yourself down.
