I’m going to run through ten very common phrases that narcissists like to use to keep you in your place and prevent you from having your own voice. Let’s keep in mind that these phrases contribute to the erosion of your own sense of self. I’ll list these phrases and see if any sound familiar to you.
For example, when you try to express who you are and what your thoughts are, the narcissist often uses the phrase, “You’re just being selfish.” 1. YOU’RE JUST BEING SELFISH. This is a classic projection of their tendencies onto you.
Another common phrase they use is, “You are so stupid,” or “You’re so awkward.” 2. YOU ARE SO STUPID. They have no problem letting you know that they believe you are on the bottom rung—you are inferior while they consider themselves superior, and don’t you dare forget it.
A third phrase they often use that causes you to eventually lose your voice is, “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” 3. YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT. If you attempt to express yourself, recall an event, or discuss something important, they may rewrite history, saying, “You’ve got that wrong; you don’t know what you’re talking about.” If you hear that often enough, you begin questioning yourself.
A fourth statement narcissists might make that causes you to lose your voice is, “People just don’t like you.” 4. PEOPLE JUST DON’T LIKE YOU. Over time, this can erode your self-confidence, making you feel inadequate, which ensures that you feel you need them.
