This is exactly what happened in my father’s case. Throughout my entire childhood and into my adult years, he treated us horribly. You may already know that. Without the fear of any consequences, he fully let his monstrous self manifest and was as cruel as he could be. Never once did he think that things might take a turn one day. His assumption was that he would have control over me and other family members forever. He was vulgar, vain, volatile, violent, and vicious. From physical to psychological abuse, he did everything a narcissist could do to destroy relationships that he never let build in the first place. He never showed up in any capacity as a father or as a husband.
When I grew up and slowly built the courage to take a stand for myself and for my mother, who is a covert narcissist but also a victim of his extreme torture and abuse, his reaction was one of complete disbelief. The first time I pushed back, I didn’t even make eye contact with him. In one instance, he wanted to take away my phone and break it. I simply said, “No, I won’t let you.” Even though I was terrified of him, I said something back. This triggered him so badly because it was the first time he was watching me begin to rise, and he unleashed the worst type of rage I had ever seen from him.
He left a mark on my face that I still have today under my eye, almost digging the nail of his index finger into my skin. I could not believe my eyes and ears because this level of violence was extreme even for him. But he did not stop, and I kept evolving. It ultimately came to a point where we had a physical altercation. I was not beating him, but I was restraining him while he was hitting me with wires or whatever he could get his hands on. He would use anything to hurt us, regardless of how dangerous it would be or how much it would hurt. That day, I did not allow him to continue.
