A common trap is believing a narcissist’s words over their actions. Narcissists are masters of deception, using charm and persuasive language to create an illusion of sincerity, responsibility, or goodwill. They may make promises of change, express remorse, or deliver grandiose declarations of love or loyalty while their actions tell a very different story.
For example, a narcissist might promise to respect your boundaries but repeatedly overstep them to suit their needs. Trust their patterns of behavior, not their claims, as actions reveal their true intentions far more accurately than words ever will.
Do Not Confide Your Weaknesses
Sharing your vulnerabilities with a narcissist can be dangerous. Narcissists often weaponize personal information to maintain control or manipulate others. They lack genuine empathy and see others’ weaknesses as tools to exploit rather than opportunities to build trust.
For example, if you confide in them about a fear or past trauma, they may later use it against you during an argument, smear campaign, or power struggle. Protect yourself by maintaining strong emotional boundaries.
Do Not Let Them Reframe Your Reality
Allowing a narcissist to reframe your reality can undermine your sense of self and lead to emotional confusion. Narcissists are skilled at gaslighting—manipulating you into doubting your perceptions, memories, or experiences.
For instance, if you confront them about hurtful behavior, they might insist you’re too sensitive or remembering things wrong. Over time, this tactic erodes your confidence. Anchor yourself in reality by documenting events, seeking validation from trustworthy individuals, and reminding yourself that your feelings and experiences are valid.
