In a person’s early adult years, traits associated with narcissism can emerge, but there is hope that as maturity catches up, those narcissistic tendencies can lessen. Dr. Les Carter explains that unfortunately many narcissists not only do not mature, but their tendencies worsen with age. He highlights seven of the most common indicators of narcissists who regress as the years go by.
Seven Signs a Narcissist Is Worsening with Age
1. They give up on love.
Early on, narcissists may appear to value relationships—be it marriage, friendship, or family. However, as they age, they prioritize power over connection. Rather than fostering love, they seek to dominate and control those around them, creating an authoritarian dynamic.
2. They don’t learn from broken experiences.
Instead of reflecting on failed relationships or mistakes, narcissists frame themselves as misunderstood victims. They blame others, rely on black-and-white thinking, and become increasingly rigid, missing opportunities for introspection and growth.
3. They ignore their shadow self.
Everyone has a shadow self—pain, past mistakes, or areas for growth. Narcissists refuse to confront theirs, which leads to emotional volatility and detachment. They suppress or deny their pain instead of addressing it.
