When we talk about narcissists getting their karma, what comes to your mind? Oh, that rarely happens, or it happens when they are really old, fragile, and frail—when they cannot maintain their narcissistic facade. When their defenses are down, people are forced to abandon them, and they lose access to their various sources of supply. That is how the story goes; they decline from there. That’s true, of course, and it happens in many cases. But what if I told you there are some narcissists whose lives get ruined, and who lose it all when they are young and quite energetic, when they have a lot to live for? Don’t believe me? I’m going to prove it to you through my experience.
Background: College Years with a Narcissist
I used to live with this narcissistic roommate a long time ago during my college years. We were studying the same course and thought it would be easier to live together since we came from the same culture and lived far from our home state. We spoke the same language, enjoyed the same food, and had similar interests. In the beginning, he appeared to be a humble guy who followed certain moral values, was religious, and knew right from wrong. But all of this was proven false.
The Downward Spiral: Theft and Gaslighting
As time passed, a couple of months down the line, I caught him stealing items from the grocery store. When I confronted him, he showed no remorse or embarrassment. He laughed it off, saying, “They charge us a lot of money; why not take this much from them? It’s a big store; it doesn’t hurt them. It’s only a couple of items.” I was shocked and began to wonder, “Who is this person?” On one hand, I saw him praying daily, while on the other, he would sneak around to steal.
