Slowly, they’ll crawl into your financial world and make themselves a part of it, and you will feel obliged. The moment you think of setting a boundary, they will push you away and trigger abandonment anxiety, forcing you to let it go and give them what they’re demanding.
Here’s another example: You meet a narcissist who makes it seem like they’re doing well financially. They slowly and non-consensually move into your life and then burden you with financial responsibilities. They don’t work at all. They sit at home 24/7. They don’t contribute financially—not even a single penny—and then demand money from you. If you don’t give it to them, they threaten you with separation, divorce, or other consequences. They basically make you a financial slave. That’s how these parasitic relationships work. They love bomb you and devalue you based on how much they can get from you.
This is why I called it a cashless, moneyless way of controlling you and your finances.
Manipulating Career Choices
Number two: They manipulate your career choices. The narcissist is financially jealous of you. It’s called financial jealousy. They never want you to earn more than they do—they always want the upper hand. So they may not directly ask for money or financially abuse you, but they will influence your career choices by undermining your capabilities.
They will gaslight you into believing, “Oh, that job isn’t that good,” or, “You don’t have what it takes to perform in that job,” and force you to take lower-paying roles. They may also manipulate you into believing that you’re giving your job more time than you should and that you need to focus on the family. That’s guilt-trapping, not just guilt-tripping. As a result, you may never be able to advance in your career or pursue your goals, leading to financial destruction.
