It is not out of love or anything heartwarming; it is all about them and their selfish needs. Narcissists are like substance addicts who constantly need drugs or alcohol to survive. In the case of narcissists, they require constant validation from other people—from you—to boost their self-esteem. Not occasional validation, but constant. Cut off the supply, and it is guaranteed that they will overreact. Therapists say that narcissists have a deficient sense of self, and as a result, they depend on others’ affirmations to fill the gap in their ego.
