In the case of narcissists, they require constant validation from other people—from you—to boost their self-esteem. Not occasional validation, but constant. Cut off the supply, and it is guaranteed that they will overreact. Therapists say that narcissists have a deficient sense of self, and as a result, they depend on others’ affirmations to fill the gap in their ego.
