Narcissists are evolving! Not in a biological sense, but rather, their narcissistic behaviors and manipulation tactics are adapting with social, cultural, and technological changes. The essence of their narcissism—such as lack of empathy, entitlement, selfishness, and grandiosity—remains, but they have adjusted to fit inevitable social and technological shifts. They’ve refined their behaviors and expanded their manipulation tactics to deceive and control people more effectively. In one of my recent videos, Is a Narcissist Spying on You?, we explored how narcissists are using people and technological advancements to monitor some of their victims, exposing how they leverage available tools to track, harass, or control whomever they can.
The same applies to their manipulation tactics, which are also evolving. Narcissists are tapping into new avenues to sharpen their manipulation skills. Today, I want to expose seven new forms of manipulation that narcissists now use to make their narcissism less detectable, perfect their image, gain attention, and more. I’ll also quickly go over why narcissists are making these changes, so please stay with me until the end.
The first, and most prevalent, new form of manipulation is through social media, which we can call “Digital Narcissism.” Social media provides fertile ground for narcissists to promote false agendas and curated personas. They create a seemingly perfect life online to gain admiration while hiding their flaws. Online, they can “love-bomb” others by bombarding someone with excessive attention, likes, and praise to win them over emotionally before eventually devaluing and discarding them. This is serious, as people are losing money and well-being over these online personas who are never what they seem. Narcissists also use social media to triangulate, posting images or videos with others to incite jealousy or tension in relationships. Social media is a jackpot for narcissists, allowing them to be anyone they want and granting unlimited access to “narcissistic supply.”
