When you lash out as a result of the narcissist’s provocations, there is no going back. Once the narcissist gets someone to this point, it will never be forgotten. So, even if it never happens again, they will use it against you again and again. They will tell it to whoever will listen and keep adding to it in order to paint you like the dangerous, abusive one who they are now so afraid of. And now the narcissist has some truth to add to their lies that they can use to slander and discredit you. Reacting to a narcissist is not usually a good thing.
When you react to a narcissist, it confirms to them that there is an emotional investment on your part. And whether it is love or hate, the narcissist will use it to manipulate and control you. The narcissist enjoys provocation and getting people to react. They get to feed off of you and they get to play with your emotions. But also, they try and make you feel like you are the worst for lashing out at them. And above all, it allows the narcissist to successfully play the victim. This is why it is important to know how to deal with toxic energy vampires. We have to learn to control our emotions or the narcissist will control them for us. But to conclude, narcissists will keep hating, manipulating, lying, gossiping, triangulating, cheating, and more to provoke us to react to them, then they will use that reaction against us.
We cannot give them that opportunity or power over us as it doesn’t benefit us in any way. The only person who wins when we react negatively or aggressively is the Narcissist.
