When a narcissist is caught in a lie, the first line of defense is almost always denial. No matter how strong the evidence, they will refuse to admit the truth. This can be infuriating for the person calling them out, especially when the proof is irrefutable—be it in the form of photos, texts, or other hard evidence. But don’t expect a logical discussion or an admission of guilt. Instead, denial will likely be followed by a full-blown rage.
Narcissistic rage is one of the most common responses when their grandiose image is threatened. Rather than calmly addressing the issue, they may lash out, deflect blame, and turn the situation into a chaotic mess. This tactic serves to shift the focus away from their lie and put you on the defensive. In their mind, if they can make the confrontation so unpleasant, you’ll back down or become too overwhelmed to continue.
