Can You Get PTSD from Narcissistic Abuse?

While partner abuse is the most recognized form of narcissistic abuse, it’s important to acknowledge that narcissistic parents can inflict lasting damage as well. Unlike relationships with narcissistic partners, which may last a few years, narcissistic parental abuse can last a lifetime. Children of narcissistic parents often struggle with Complex PTSD well into adulthood.

The parent-child dynamic is naturally imbalanced, with the child relying on the parent for both physical and emotional needs. Narcissistic parents take advantage of this dependency, using their children as a source of validation and narcissistic supply. This type of manipulation and emotional abuse leaves children feeling unworthy, emotionally dependent, and trapped in a cycle of seeking approval.

Children of narcissistic parents often carry the scars of that relationship into adulthood, finding themselves in similar toxic relationships and struggling with feelings of inadequacy. The trauma is deeply ingrained, making recovery a long-term process.
