Amongst all the secrets that a narcissist hides from the world at large, there is one secret they protect fiercely and take to their grave. If this secret were to be known by others, it would be game over for that narcissist; their identity would fall apart, and they would lose any power over others. When you live with a narcissist for decades, you come to know that they are extremely insecure, that they are copycats, and that there is nothing original about them. They can be boring, and the charm they display in the beginning is nothing but deception. They are cruel, yet this secret still remains hidden. That’s why I’m going to reveal it to you.
The secret I’m talking about is something I’ve learned after surviving 23 years of narcissistic abuse. You may want to stick around until the very end because once you know it, no narcissist will ever be able to harm you.
You know how a narcissist functions: there are two aspects to their personality. On one hand, we have their true self, and on the other hand, we have their false self. The true self is everything they cannot accept; it is the fire that can burn them and turn them into ashes. That’s why they maintain a safe distance from it—by dissociating from it and suppressing the real information about themselves. As you spend time with them, their true self becomes visible. You get to know that they are fragile, extremely vulnerable, and immature.
Then we have the false self. The false self is everything their true self is not. It is charismatic, kind, promising, knowledgeable about the world, and capable of making things happen. It is everything you are looking for. Their false self is maintained by first lying to themselves, justifying those lies, and then lying to you. For this personality dynamic to function properly, the splitting must continue, and they must live as their false self, which means keeping their secrets hidden.
