Have you ever watched a puppet show? The puppets jerk around, dancing and twirling, going wherever the strings pull them. That’s the narcissist’s game. They’re the puppet master, pulling the strings of everyone around them, and you’re their favorite marionette—if you’re giving them the attention they crave. But when you ignore them, when you cut those strings, you break the entire illusion. You pull the plug on their power.
Suddenly, the puppet master is standing there, holding strings that go nowhere, trying to figure out why the puppets aren’t dancing anymore. This is where it gets dangerous. The narcissist is no longer in control. They’ll lash out, try to reel you back in, guilt you into dancing for them again. But deep down, they know something’s changed. They know they’ve lost their grip.
You have the power to stay out of the show. You have the ability to stop the performance before it even starts. You’re not their puppet, and every time you pull away, you remind them of that. You remind them that you don’t need to dance on their strings; you’re the one holding your own.
