Recovery from this kind of trauma requires a lot of peace, especially after going no contact with the narcissist. It involves reclaiming your right to peace and quiet. One of the most healing aspects of leaving a narcissistic relationship is the simple joy of silence. The ability to exist in a quiet space, control your own sound environment, and not brace for the next audio assault is profoundly healing.
What I’m sharing with you comes from my personal experience. I struggled with sensory overwhelm for a long time. To this day, I use earbuds and eye shades when I sleep. My room must be completely dark and silent for me to fall asleep peacefully.
You need to give your nervous system a real break. You may initially feel afraid of the silence because it’s unfamiliar, but as you begin to rest in it, you will find yourself. That’s what healing is all about.
