What motivates you to do things the way you do and the way you behave is not what motivates a narcissist. When you choose to help someone, you are driven by empathy—you genuinely want to improve their situation and uplift them. However, when a narcissist chooses to help the same person, they aren’t motivated by empathy because they lack it. Instead, they are driven by how they will appear after helping that person. They are motivated by the desire to enhance their image, which is why they are fundamentally different. You can’t understand them because their mindset is entirely different from yours, and that’s what we’ll be discussing in today’s episode.
1. Schadenfreude: Pleasure from Others’ Misfortune (Sadism)
You’re familiar with the narcissist’s smirk when they witness your downfall. Schadenfreude is an advanced form of this—they plan your downfall with sadistic pleasure. When you crumble, they won’t help or save you; they’ll let you burn in the fire they set. For them, causing your emotional collapse is their high, their mental satisfaction. This is why they abandon you, withhold affection, stonewall, or give you the silent treatment. Your suffering is their climax, which nothing else can replicate. This is why they’re addicted to creating chaos.
