God Gave You a Narcissist for a Reason — And This Is What You Need to Understand

Let me tell you something most people don’t want to hear: that narcissist in your life didn’t just stumble there by accident. It wasn’t random, and it wasn’t meaningless. As much as you may hate it, as much as it may feel unfair, there’s a reason they showed up.

We like to think blessings only come wrapped in comfort, but God doesn’t work like that. Sometimes, a blessing comes dressed as a storm. Sometimes, it comes as a thorn. Sometimes, it comes as the one person who drives you to the edge of yourself—not to destroy you, but to show you who you really are. And yes, it’s painful. Yes, it feels like betrayal on repeat. But pain has a purpose. Every scar, every sleepless night, and every manipulation you endured pushes you closer to the lesson you were meant to learn. Because God doesn’t waste suffering; He recycles it into strength.

So when you ask, “Why me?” the answer isn’t punishment; the answer is preparation. That narcissist was a teacher in disguise, and the curriculum wasn’t about them at all. It was about you—your growth, your boundaries, your faith, your destiny.

Now, let’s dig into the first thing you need to understand: the thorn in the flesh. The narcissist is your thorn. If that sounds familiar, it should. Even the Apostle Paul wrote about a thorn in his flesh—something painful, unrelenting, something he begged God to take away. But God didn’t remove it. Instead, He said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” That’s what the narcissist is: not a curse, but a thorn. Painful? Yes. Annoying? Yes. But purposeful.

What does a thorn do? It reminds you. It keeps you awake. It forces you to move differently, to stop depending on your own strength and start leaning on God’s. Think about it: if life were smooth, if everyone treated you kindly, you’d never grow a backbone. You’d never sharpen your discernment. You’d never realize how strong you really are. But when a narcissist is breathing down your neck, you either collapse or rise. Rising is exactly what God is pushing you to do.
