Is Narcissism a Human Evil?

Today, we will address and tackle an important subject: Is narcissism a human evil? There are so many tragic events happening today that I believe this is a relevant and necessary question to explore. From the Ruby Frankie case to the Sha Comes case, to the wars unfolding in different parts of the world, to the many traumatic experiences I’ve personally endured—this is a topic worth discussing. I know many of you have lived through similar traumatic experiences caused by disordered individuals.

The first time this specific topic came to my attention was during my last custody trial, when I faced severe alienation from my only child. I was fortunate to hire some of the best parental alienation specialists, who were instrumental in helping me understand how my child had transformed from a loving, empathetic, and beautiful person—someone with whom I had an extremely close and loving relationship—into someone I no longer recognized. And it happened alarmingly fast.

I had no idea that parental alienation was even a concept, and I never imagined that my bond with my child could be vulnerable to such manipulation. For those of you who have experienced the extremes of narcissistic abuse and parental alienation, you understand why I refer to this as “evil.” There is simply no other word that accurately captures the disgust and heinousness of these acts.

Personally, I do believe this is evil, and I’ll explain why. One of the books that profoundly impacted me during my custody trial was People of the Lie by M. Scott Peck. The author, a distinguished psychotherapist and psychiatrist, raises the question: Is there such a thing as human evil? If the answer is yes, how would mental health professionals diagnose it? What specific criteria would qualify it as a diagnosis in the DSM?

I’ll discuss his findings shortly. Additionally, one resource suggested by Dr. Michael Bone, a parental alienation specialist who helped me immensely, was a lecture by Dr. Philip Zimbardo titled The Psychology of Human Evil. Watching that lecture helped me understand what happened to my son.
