They can’t stand it. As I mentioned earlier, everything has to be about them. If it’s not about their grandiosity or victimhood, they won’t listen at all. They need attention, admiration, and enabling. It’s not about you—you don’t exist in their narcissistic bubble of reality. It’s only their fantasy, and in their fantasy, everyone is a slave, an emotion-producing object. They know how to push buttons.
When you try to talk to them, they’ll easily get distracted, start doing something else, or get really angry at you. You’ll be left wondering, “What happened? Why are you mad at me? What did I do?” This is just to shift the focus back to themselves. You might be talking about your financial issues, not knowing what to do. Instead of acknowledging your situation and offering help, they’ll immediately start talking about their problems: “Oh, I have it worse than you. I have this going on, that going on.” Nobody complains as much as a narcissist desperate for attention. They’ll keep complaining until the original purpose of your call is lost. You called them for support, but by the end of the call, you find yourself consoling them. This is how they take control.
