1. They Like to Take Charge
Narcissists thrive on control. They’re skilled at steering situations and conversations in their favor, often leaving others feeling frustrated and defeated. They have an exaggerated sense of self-importance and dislike being challenged. When a narcissist’s demands for special treatment or exceptions are denied, they experience a blow to their inflated ego. This reminds them of their vulnerabilities, such as manipulation or inadequacy, which they fiercely try to conceal. Their need to dominate is an attempt to avoid this discomfort.
2. They Fear Losing Control
Narcissists fear any situation where their self-esteem or self-worth is threatened. When they perceive a loss of control, they experience a “narcissistic injury,” which often triggers rage. This rage stems from the fear of their false persona being exposed. When someone else takes control, it’s seen as a direct attack on their carefully constructed identity. In response, they may become emotionally, verbally, or even physically abusive to regain control of their environment.
3. They Are Highly Sensitive
Despite their tough exterior, narcissists are deeply sensitive individuals with fragile self-esteem. They are easily hurt by criticism, even if it’s delivered constructively. Pointing out their shortcomings often leads to extreme defensiveness and retaliation. Their responses can be disproportionate and harmful, including passive-aggressive behavior or vindictive actions. This hypersensitivity often results in abnormal and dangerous reactions to perceived slights.
