Surviving narcissistic abuse can leave you struggling with various mental health challenges. Why? Because it’s a leading cause behind the development of some severe mental health issues. I’m talking about conditions like complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), generalized anxiety disorder, psychosis, ADHD, and somatic disorders.
How does it cause all of this? It takes every ounce of energy and resourcefulness to survive that kind of abusive environment, which inevitably takes a toll on your body, brain, and soul. This leaves you exhausted, questioning your identity and asking yourself, “Who am I now?” and “What do I do from here?”
1. Chronic Anxiety Disorders
This is when you’re constantly on edge, anxious, and worrying. No matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to relax. You might try calming meditations, even medication, but still, your nervous system can’t fully let go. This ongoing anxiety feels like a washing machine of worry and paranoia spinning in your mind.
Why? Because the narcissistic abuse disregulated your nervous system to a chronic fight-or-flight state. Ideally, our dominant state should be “rest and digest,” but your system has adapted to constant survival mode due to prolonged trauma exposure.
Reversing anxiety takes time—often months to years. Start by focusing on nervous system regulation, feeling safe emotionally and environmentally, so your body can finally relax and re-stabilize.
