Male and female narcissists alike often undergo significant bodywork. I’m talking about plastic surgery to maintain their charm and preserve their looks. They hate anything that changes their body shape. For example, a female narcissist may want children but at the same time hate pregnancy because it changes her abdominal shape and causes stretch marks. While it’s understandable that changes in appearance after pregnancy can be difficult, the narcissistic woman may take this resentment out on the child, blaming them for “ruining” her body. A non-narcissistic mother wouldn’t do this. Narcissists try to stay young not to live a healthy life or spend more time with their family but to keep the supply coming. Without supply, they cannot exist.
Number two: The fear of losing their health.
It’s universally known that health is wealth, but for a narcissist, it’s everything. It’s beyond wealth because they hate vulnerability and dependency. They don’t want to depend on anyone or even give the impression that they might. The thought of aging, fragility, and dependency makes them feel weak, which challenges their false self.
To combat this, they become obsessed with staying fit. Their health anxiety is delusional and can turn into hypochondria. They’ll often misinterpret bodily sensations as serious health problems, like cancer, and obsessively search the internet or visit doctors for tests to rule out potential issues. Again, not all people with health anxiety are narcissists, but narcissists become health freaks because they fear weakness. This fear can extend to controlling others, dictating not only their food choices but yours as well. They project their resentment onto you, shaming and blaming you for any unhealthy habits.
Number three: The fear of becoming irrelevant.
