If you were to think about some of the biggest fears of a narcissist, what would come to mind? The fear of being exposed, the fear of losing their sources of supply, the fear of losing control over you and others, the fear of losing money and the stability that comes with it. But these are the fears that are known to everyone. What about their inner fears, the ones they don’t want you to know about? Let’s talk about those in this episode.
Number one: The fear of losing their youth.
With the loss of youth comes the fear of losing their appearance, how their body looks, their charm, confidence, and strength. I’m not talking about the general fear people have about getting older. I understand everyone wants to stay young. But for a narcissist, this fear is something separate—it’s a paranoia. It comes with delusional anxiety, which I’ll explain in a moment. They don’t want to get old because getting old means losing power, and losing supply. This is especially true for somatic and sexual narcissists who attract their sources of fuel through their appearance.
As they age, they become obsessed with their looks. You’ll find them constantly looking at their reflection, measuring every inch of increase or decrease in their body. Calorie consciousness becomes their way of life—not a calorie more or less, sticking to what they believe is required. Now, I’m not saying being health-conscious makes someone a narcissist. What I’m pointing out is their delusion: the fear of facing reality. The reality is that they’re getting old. But instead of embracing it, they run away from it. It’s in their nature—they’ve been running from their shame, from their insecurities, so why wouldn’t they run from what’s inevitable?
