Narcissists are drawn to people with a strong sense of responsibility. If you take pride in doing the right thing and caring for others, they see you as someone they can rely on to meet their emotional needs.
Such individuals often prioritize others, fix problems, and maintain order. For narcissists, this is an open invitation to offload their emotional baggage onto you, knowing you’ll take it on without complaint.
This sense of duty makes it harder to walk away. When you care deeply about someone, detaching feels impossible because you feel responsible for their well-being. Unfortunately, this dynamic often leads to neglecting your own needs and becoming trapped in a cycle of self-sacrifice.
Optimism and Idealism
Narcissists are often trapped in a negative mindset, so they’re drawn to those with a positive outlook on life. If you radiate hope, joy, and enthusiasm, your energy can temporarily lift them up.
However, over time, they drain your vitality. They’ll slowly wear down your optimism, leaving you feeling hollow and worthless. This is part of their power play—breaking you down to gain control.
Gaslighting is one of their favorite tactics. Even if you sense something is wrong, they manipulate your perception, making you doubt your reality. They twist your hope and use it against you to tighten their grip.
