When the narcissistic person’s MASK falls off

I know many of you have this question: What happens when the narcissist’s mask falls off? Let’s set the scene. You’re in a relationship with a narcissistic person. Maybe they’re stretched thin in their lives — their promotion didn’t come through, or a few things they felt entitled to didn’t work out as they expected. They could be tired, jet-lagged, or experiencing some form of frustration.

You’re at a public event — a party, a concert, a meeting, or a family gathering — and something happens that sets them off. Maybe someone looks at them the wrong way, they don’t receive the praise they expected, or someone makes a joke that leaves them feeling humiliated. Perhaps you forgot to bring something you were supposed to. Whatever the trigger, they lose it. This is not what they usually do because, typically, they would lose it in private. But now, they’ve slipped, and they’ve lost their temper in front of others, and people notice. Suddenly, the narcissistic person is the one looking unhinged, which is what they’ve always tried to avoid — especially in front of people whose opinions they value or whose support they need. They want to be well-liked by everyone, especially in circles essential to their work or social life. Even you are surprised that they finally exposed this side of themselves publicly.
