Narcissists can operate on different levels of abuse, but their desired outcome is the same. They want you to react. They want you to retaliate. They want to bring out the worst in you. They want to lap up all the negative energy that you have to spit at them. They are energy vampires and these toxic situations feed and strengthen the darkness within them.
These are the moments where that devilish smirk or duper’s delight overtakes them. And it is because they have managed to get you to this point, which makes the narcissist feel empowered and in control. Because not only do they feed off of your negative energy, but it also allows them to point a finger at you and make you feel guilty. They would make you feel guilty to the point where you don’t even realize that they are the ones who triggered you.
Narcissists are very good at pointing out our faults and making us feel guilty for reacting to them. They are very good at minimizing what they did and exaggerating what others did. And if you are not wise to their games, they will hold you accountable for everything, not just how you reacted to them, but also for the evil they did to you. Then you are the only one apologizing and trying to make nice while the narcissist plays the victim card.
