The first trigger is a heightened emotional state. During moments of rage or intense manipulation, a narcissist’s eyes may seem to darken. Their eyes reflect the intensity of their emotions and their malicious desires.

During these manipulative or predatory moments, a narcissist can exhibit emotional emptiness or coldness. Their eyes may not only appear black but also lifeless or hollow.
Major Offense
The third and most common cause is a narcissistic injury—when the narcissist’s ego is deeply bruised. In these moments, they may react with extreme anger or rage. A covert narcissist, particularly in public settings, might manage to control their emotional outbursts, but their eyes will often give away the turmoil inside. Their gaze can become especially intense and menacing, a prime opportunity to notice that “blackness” in their eyes.
