Is Narcissism a Human Evil?

However, I must give a strong trigger warning: If you choose to look up this lecture, be aware that it contains extremely disturbing and graphic images. Please proceed with caution and consider your mental health before watching. I’d feel terrible if anyone in my audience were traumatized by the content, so viewer discretion is advised.

Returning to People of the Lie, I highly recommend this book to anyone who has survived extreme narcissistic abuse or parental alienation. It offers a profound understanding of how these individuals think and why they behave as they do.

In his book, M. Scott Peck references numerous patients he treated during his long and accomplished career. He explains how many of them demonstrated what he defined as “evil.” In the conclusion of his book, he identifies malignant narcissism as the essence of human evil. He also outlines diagnostic criteria for identifying such individuals.

If you’ve been subjected to extreme narcissistic abuse or parental alienation, these criteria will likely resonate deeply. According to Peck, the ten characteristics of human evil are:

  1. Consistently self-deceiving with the intent of avoiding guilt and maintaining a self-image of perfection.
  2. Deceives others as a consequence of their own self-deception.
  3. Projects their evils onto specific targets while appearing normal to others.
  4. Hates under the pretense of love to deceive both themselves and others.
  5. Abuses power through overt or covert coercion to impose their will on others.
  6. Maintains a facade of respectability and lies incessantly to do so.
  7. Consistently destructive, not necessarily by the magnitude of their sins, but by their persistence.
  8. Lacks empathy, unable to consider the victim’s perspective or trauma.
  9. Is intolerant to criticism and reacts intensely to narcissistic injury.
  10. Avoids introspection, unable to admit their own evil, instead adopting a false sense of moral superiority and projecting evil onto others.

For survivors of such abuse, reading these criteria can be mind-blowing and validating. It was a shocking but liberating realization for me—it helped me finally understand the individuals I had been dealing with throughout my life.

I hope this understanding brings you some relief, validation, and clarity, even though the reality may be difficult to accept. Healing often begins with acknowledging and comprehending what we’ve endured.
