So, how do narcissists test their victims, and why do they do it at all? The number one reason they test you is to ensure you’re for them. In a narcissist’s world, which is full of turmoil and chaos, you’re either for them or against them. If you’re not for them, you’re the enemy—public enemy number one. So, they’re constantly testing you to see if you’re on their side, and you’re always having to prove it. They test you in many ways.
The reason they do this is because they need an endless amount of what we call “supply.” They want to make sure you’re there to serve their primary purpose: feeding their need for narcissistic supply. Narcissistic supply can be anything that feeds their ego, like compliments, admiration, or respect. If you don’t give them good supply, they’ll take bad supply—things like devaluing, debasing, making you feel bad, judging, or putting you down. Sometimes it’s in small, passive-aggressive ways, like drip, drip, drip on your self-esteem, causing what feels like death by a thousand cuts.
