They make weird noises, talk to someone else, get easily distracted, watch reels, or listen to music when talking to you—especially when it’s your turn to talk. They don’t like to listen and have no patience for anything that isn’t about them. Overt or covert narcissists display the same behavior. Sometimes the distraction is obvious, as if they’re telling you, “I’m annoyed. Just go away. I don’t want to talk to you.” They’ll play music intentionally, making sure you hear it, so you know you’re not welcome. Then, after 10 or 20 minutes, they’ll come back to you saying, “Oh, I apologize. I forgot we were on a call.” This is what is called neglect through a phone call. They neglect you when they know you need them the most—when you’re going through something difficult and need to talk. They’ll put their phone aside while you’re talking, leaving you to speak to yourself, and when you ask them, they won’t remember anything at all. If you point out that this is an issue, they’ll call you the crazy one. “See, this is how clingy you are. This is how crazy you are. You don’t give me space to breathe. This is why I don’t want to talk to you.” And then they’ll hang up.
