A narcissist’s favorite subject is themselves. If every conversation revolves around their life, their problems, or their successes, and they rarely show interest in what’s going on with you, it’s a red flag. While it’s natural to want to help people you care about, narcissists take this to an extreme. You might find yourself constantly listening to their problems, with very little reciprocation.
They may ask you how you’re doing, but only as an afterthought, and when you respond, they gloss over your reply or fail to follow up. This can leave you feeling like your needs and experiences aren’t important. Over time, this one-sided dynamic can be exhausting and emotionally draining.
3. Future Faking
Narcissists often promise a bright future to keep you hooked. This is known as “future faking.” They’ll talk about all the amazing things you’ll do together—whether in a romantic, business, or friendship context. You might receive messages about future plans, such as starting a business, traveling together, or attending events. However, these plans rarely come to fruition.
The disconnect between their grand promises and their lack of follow-through can be confusing. You may find yourself wondering why these plans never happen or why they suddenly stop communicating after making big promises. This back-and-forth between love bombing and neglect often leads to feelings of confusion and frustration.
