Number one: Reading or engaging in any passion. Toxic individuals often hate to see you enjoying yourself. They might overtly insult you or make you feel guilty for pursuing something you love. You might hear comments like, “Shouldn’t you be doing something else?” or “Why are you wasting your time?” It’s ironic because once you stop enjoying that activity, they will turn around and criticize you for giving it up. If you have those connections, you’re likely to gain a more balanced perspective, which threatens their control.
Number three: Any accomplishment you achieve. Whether it’s a raise at work, an award, or any form of recognition, narcissists will find ways to devalue your accomplishments. Each time she shared her pride with her mother, the mother would belittle her achievements, erasing the joy she felt and leaving her feeling worthless. Toxic individuals often have a way of diminishing your self-worth.
