The narcissist’s insatiable need for prestige, success, and power often leads to irrational decisions. They might engage in excessive purchases, unwise investments, or other reckless behaviors. In work environments, they may create a climate of fear, despair, or apathy among colleagues.
They Tear Others Down
To maintain their inflated self-image, narcissists frequently put others down. If you’re in a relationship with a narcissist—even a new one—you may notice that they constantly criticize others to elevate themselves. Eventually, they will likely direct that criticism toward you.
History of Broken Relationships
When examining a narcissist’s past, you’ll often find a pattern of failed long-term relationships—be it with friends, romantic partners, or business associates. They always portray themselves as the victim, claiming to have been wronged by others.
Escalation of Abuse
Once a narcissist realizes that you know their true nature, they may increase their criticism and manipulation. They’ll condemn your actions, complain constantly, and might even become competitive with you. Disagreeing with or confronting a narcissist becomes nearly impossible because they refuse to acknowledge their flaws or consider your perspective.
