Shame drives their state of mind, dictating their behavior. Attempts to persuade them to socialize or visit family often lead to agitation or tantrums. They’ll give excuses, but the truth is they’re terrified of the attention. To them, being seen means exposing their vulnerability. This fear drives their isolation.
Behavior 2: Rage Outbursts
While narcissists are prone to anger, a collapsed narcissist is perpetually simmering with rage. One small provocation can cause an explosive outburst. Their lack of self-control becomes evident as they lash out verbally and even physically. They’ll say the cruelest things, dredge up past grievances, and behave in ways that are downright inhumane.
These outbursts often feel demonic, as if you’re dealing with something other than a person. Why do they rage so easily? To mask their vulnerability and reassert control. They can’t accept their weakened state, so they lash out to push others away.
Behavior 3: Playing the Victim
Collapsed narcissists often resort to playing the victim, regardless of their narcissistic subtype—overt, covert, grandiose, or altruistic. They’ll tell exaggerated or fabricated stories of struggle to elicit sympathy.
